THE HISTORY OF STANWAY ROVERS
The Stanway Rovers records show that the Club reformed on Tuesday 10th
July 1956. However newspaper cuttings tell us that there was a football club operating in the early 1900’s.
The minute book shows that the first meeting was held at St. Albright’s
Hall in Stanway, the meeting was chaired by the late Jack Poole of Essex County Football Association.
The Rovers played their matches at this time on the King George V playing
field Lexden, which is more commonly known as Clairmont Road. They were accepted into Division Two of the Colchester &
East Essex League, and by 1960 they had gained promotion to the Premier Division. A Reserve Team was then formed playing in
Division Five.
The records then show that the Club moved to Stanway Secondary School
in 1961. The Headmaster at that time Mr Gardham took up the position of Club President. This was an office that all Headmasters
at the School held whilst the Club stayed there. The facilities at the School were second to none, using the gymnasium and
later the sports hall and the Schools soccer pitches from 1974
Stanway Rovers enjoyed their most successful season in the Colchester
& East Essex League in 1973-74. They won the League title as well as the competitions other trophies, and defeated a League
Representative side. That same season they reached the quarter- finals of the Essex Junior Cup.
The following season 1974-75, the Club did reach the Final of the Essex
Junior Cup losing to Takely 1-0, in a match played at the Grays Athletic FC ground.
In the 1975-76 season, the first team joined the Essex & Suffolk
Border League playing in Division One. At the start of the 1978-79 season the Club were placed in the new Division Two of
the Border League finishing in 3rd position and gaining promotion to Division One. The Reserve Team had at this time also
joined the Border League.
Around this time in 1979, the home of the Club was being discussed with
the Local Authority, who agreed to lease us 4.6 acres of land over a 99- year period. The new Clubhouse was finally opened
on 18th November 1982, carrying the name of the ‘Hawthorns’
The Club reached the Final of the Essex Intermediate Cup two years running,
in 1989-90 and 1990-91 losing both games 3-1.
In the 1991-92 season Stanway Rovers finished runners up in the Premier
Division of the Essex & Suffolk Border League. Their application to join the then Jewson League was duly accepted, and
they were granted Senior Status. Their first game in the Jewson League was a 2-2 draw at Swaffham Town on 22nd August 1992
The Club finished the rebuilding of its Headquarters at the Hawthorns,
despite failing to receive a grant from the National Lottery. The Clubhouse and Function Room were officialy opened on
28th March 2001 by Mr Bob Russell MP.
In November 2003 James McIntyre was appointed Manager with Ian 'Dan' Daly joining him a few months
later, and they soon assembled a good squad of young players.
After 14 seasons in Division One the 'Rovers' were crowned Champions in 2006 and were also
Finalists in the First Division Knockout Cup.
